About this piece

The Old Fashioned didn’t become the world’s best-selling cocktail by accident it works because the ice sphere melts slowly, the wide opening releases the aromatic, and the heavy base feels deliberate in hand. This glass is built for that ritual.

Why this glass over a standard rocks glass

Three differences:

  1. Heavier base (380g vs 200g typical): feels substantial; doesn’t slide on a polished bar surface
  2. Wider mouth (8.5cm vs 7cm); fits a proper 5cm ice sphere with room to spare
  3. Slightly taller — accommodates the sphere + a generous double pour without spilling

The wider mouth matters most. A standard rocks glass is fine for whisky on a few cubes, but a single large ice sphere (the standard for modern Old Fashioned service) sits awkwardly tight. This glass was designed around the sphere.

Best for

  • Old Fashioneds the cocktail it’s built around
  • Whisky neat with a single sphere: bourbon, scotch, rye, Irish
  • Tumbler-served cocktails: Negronis, Sazeracs, Boulevardiers (anything not in a coupe)
  • Gift purchases — pair with a quality bottle (Buffalo Trace bourbon at £30, Aberlour 12 at £45) for a complete present
  • Restaurant-grade home bar heavier than supermarket glasses, looks intentional on a bar cart

Sizing: what fits

  • 300ml total capacity; leaves headroom even when full
  • 5cm ice sphere fits comfortably with room for a 60ml double pour
  • 4 large cubes (3cm) also work for serving on the rocks
  • A 60ml double pour neat fills less than 1/4 of the glass — proper room for swirling and aromatics

Lead-free crystal why it matters

Traditional lead crystal contains 24-32% lead oxide for the brilliance and weight. While lead leaching from crystal during normal drink contact is minimal, modern lead-free crystal (using potassium oxide) gives the same refractive quality with no exposure concerns. Particularly relevant for cocktails with acidic citrus (acid accelerates leaching from any glass).

This is full lead-free crystal, not just labelled “crystal-style glass.”

Care

Top-rack dishwasher safe. For best longevity: hand-wash in warm water, rinse, air-dry on a soft cloth. Store upright (not inverted on a rim) to avoid stress on the rim over time. If clouding appears after years of dishwasher use, soak in 1:1 white vinegar and water for 30 minutes: restores clarity.

Questions answered

What size ice sphere fits this glass? +

Standard 5cm (2-inch) ice sphere fits with room to add a 60ml double pour. Smaller 4cm spheres also fit; 6cm spheres are too tight. Use a silicone ice sphere mould for best results they melt slowly and dilute less than crushed ice.

How is this different from a standard rocks glass? +

Heavier base (380g vs 200g for typical rocks glass), wider mouth (8.5cm vs 7cm) for a proper ice sphere, and slightly taller. Designed specifically for the modern Old Fashioned and neat-pour-with-large-ice serving style. A standard rocks glass works for whisky on the rocks but feels cramped with a sphere.

Is the crystal lead-free? +

Yes, modern lead-free crystal made with potassium oxide instead of lead oxide. Same brilliance and refractive quality as traditional lead crystal but safe for daily drinking use, including with acidic spirits like cocktails.

Can it go in the dishwasher? +

Yes — top rack recommended. The heavy base is solid (no air pockets), so dishwasher heat doesn't crack it. Avoid overcrowding to prevent rim chipping from neighbouring glasses.

Is it sold individually or as a set? +

Sold as a single glass at £11.99. For matched sets of 2, 4, or 6, order multiple: they ship from the same batch so colour/clarity is matched. Pairs of 2 are typical for couples; sets of 4-6 for entertaining.

How does it pair with the [Portable Whisky Decanter](/product/stylish-portable-stainless-steel-decanter-set/)? +

The decanter holds 200ml (one good evening's pour for two). Pair this glass with it for a complete travel-bar kit decant your good whisky, pour into the crystal glasses with ice. The decanter ships with stainless shot cups; the crystal glasses elevate the experience for evenings.

Best whisky to drink from this glass? +

Designed for spirits that benefit from a wide opening (releases aromatics): bourbon, scotch (especially Highland and Speyside), Irish whiskey, rye. For peaty Islay scotch or delicate Japanese whisky, a Glencairn nosing glass concentrates the nose better; this is for sipping volume, not nosing finesse.

Will it crack if I put very cold ice in it? +

Lead-free crystal is more thermal-shock-resistant than traditional lead crystal. Direct freezer-to-room-temp won't crack it under normal use. Avoid extremes (boiling water + ice immediately after) and you'll never have a problem.
