About this piece

The hip flask got a redesign.

Traditional hip flasks (round, leather-wrapped, 100ml) are built around the silhouette of a 1920s suit jacket and the assumption that you’re drinking alone. This decanter is built for the modern reality: weekend trips, festivals, hotel rooms, picnics where you want enough whisky for two people and a flat shape that fits a modern jacket or weekend bag.

What you actually get

  • 200ml stainless steel decanter (about 1/3 of a standard 700ml bottle)
  • Leak-proof double-seal cap (silicone gasket + screw thread)
  • 2 nesting stainless steel shot cups (4cm × 3cm each, fit inside the decanter cap)
  • Branded gift box

The whole kit weighs 220g and packs into a space the size of a paperback novel.

Best for

Weekend trips: instead of carrying a full 700ml bottle, decant 3-4 pours of your good whisky for the weekend. Saves weight in luggage, you can leave the bottle at home.

Festivals + outdoor events; the leak-proof seal genuinely doesn’t leak (we’ve tested it inverted in a jacket pocket for hours). Stainless construction won’t shatter if dropped.

Hotel rooms — bring your own measured spirit instead of paying minibar prices. Particularly good for international travel where you don’t want to commit to a full bottle of unknown local whisky.

Picnics + cold-weather walks the insulating double wall keeps room-temp spirits at room temp and chilled spirits cold for 4-6 hours. A measured warming sip in the cold rates among life’s small pleasures.

What it’s not

  • Not a permanent home decanter: for that, get a glass decanter that lets you see and pour with proper bar-side ceremony
  • Not a vacuum flask; won’t keep ice cubes intact for a full day, just maintains temperature for hours
  • Not appropriate for delicate spirits — fine for whisky, bourbon, gin, rum, vodka, mezcal. Avoid for high-end aged tequila, vermouth, or anything where exposure to a steel surface might subtly affect the nose

The grade matters

18/8 stainless steel is the food-safe grade same as commercial drink dispensers and quality cocktail shakers. The cheaper “stainless” sometimes used in budget hip flasks can leach metallic notes into spirits over time. This won’t.

The seal is the part that matters most. Hip flasks famously fail at the cap: over time the seal compresses, the spirits seep, your pocket smells like a distillery. This uses a silicone gasket inside a screw cap, which means the seal compresses against itself rather than being squeezed by metal-on-metal threads. Lasts longer; tests cleaner.

Care

Rinse warm water after each use. Monthly bicarbonate-of-soda soak. Hand wash only; dishwasher heat will eventually compromise the silicone seal. Stored full of spirits indefinitely is fine; stored full of water for weeks isn’t (water is more corrosive than ethanol to stainless seam points).

Questions answered

How is this different from a regular hip flask? +

Three differences. (1) Capacity, 200ml vs 100-150ml for a standard hip flask, so you get more pours from one fill. (2) Shape, flatter and wider, slips into a jacket pocket without bulging. (3) Includes 2 nesting shot cups, so it's a 2-person travel kit not just a solo flask. The seal is also more substantial — purpose-built leak-proof for travel rather than just hip-pocket carry.

Is the steel safe for spirits long-term? +

Yes, 18/8 food-grade stainless steel, the same grade used in commercial drink dispensers and high-end cocktail shakers. Doesn't leach metal taste into the spirit even after weeks of contact. Don't store water-based spirits like absinthe-water mixes for months the dilution accelerates any micro-corrosion at seam points.

Can it go through airport security? +

Yes, but follow the standard 100ml liquid rule for hand luggage. The decanter holds 200ml so if it's full you'd exceed the limit; either fill to 100ml for hand luggage, or pack it in checked baggage where capacity isn't restricted. The decanter itself (empty) has zero airport restrictions.

Will spirits stay cool in it? +

The double-walled construction is insulating; keeps spirits at the temperature you put them in (room temp stays room temp; chilled stays chilled for 4-6 hours). It's not a vacuum flask so it won't keep ice cubes intact for a full day, but for picnics, festivals, or hotel sipping it holds temperature well.

What's it best for? +

Camping/festival drinks, weekend trips where you want a measured pour rather than carrying a 700ml bottle, hotel rooms where you don't trust the minibar, picnics in cold weather where a sip of whisky improves everything. Also a particularly good groomsman gift.

Does it fit in a jacket pocket? +

Yes — designed to. 14cm × 6cm × 3cm is roughly iPhone-shaped, slips into an inside jacket pocket without distorting the line of the jacket. Won't bulge like a traditional rounded hip flask does.

How do I clean it? +

Rinse with warm water after each use. For deeper clean once a month: fill with warm water + a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda, shake, leave 10 minutes, rinse thoroughly. Don't put in the dishwasher (the silicone seals can degrade with repeated high heat).

Is this a good gift? +

Excellent gift for: groomsmen (gift box presentation, useful, not generic), 30th-50th birthdays for men who appreciate spirits, Father's Day, Christmas. The fact that it includes 2 shot cups makes it feel like a complete kit rather than a single item that lifts perceived value.
