About this piece

A genuine showstopper. Real ostrich feathers individually wired to a slim brass armature, lit from beneath by a warm dimmable LED. The feathers diffuse the light into a soft halo beautiful in a hallway, bedroom corner, or above a console table.

Floor or desktop: pick your scale

Floor version (130cm tall, 45cm diameter)

  • Sits beside a sofa or armchair as a statement floor lamp
  • Lights up an entryway or hallway
  • Replaces a standard tripod or arc lamp with something genuinely unusual
  • Works best with at least 30cm of clear floor space around it

Desktop version (45cm tall, 30cm diameter)

  • Sits on a sideboard, bar cart, or console table
  • Statement piece for a large desk (not a task light)
  • Beside a bed for atmospheric lighting (not bright enough for reading)
  • Easier to ship, easier to relocate

Choose at checkout. The lamp design is identical between the two; same feather count, same brushed brass base, just different armature heights.

Pink, orange, or yellow — picking the colour

  • Pink the warm-toned crowd-pleaser. Works with cream walls, brass fixtures, soft furnishings in dusky pink, oatmeal, blush
  • Orange: the boldest of the three. Best in rooms with strong terracotta, navy, deep green, or wood tones. Reads as 1970s in a positive way
  • Yellow; golden, mustard-toned. Pairs with charcoal, navy, dark green, and earth-tone interiors. Most chameleon-like of the three colours under different lighting

All three are stable dyes — they don’t fade in normal indoor lighting. Avoid placing in direct south-facing sunlight for long stretches; UV will eventually pale the dye over many years (months for cheaper feathers, years for these).

Why feathers as a lamp

Three reasons feather lamps have stayed fashion-relevant for a century:

  1. The diffusion is unique. No fabric or paper shade gives the same texture of light it’s a soft halo with a slightly fluttering quality from the natural feather movement
  2. Tactility. Most light fittings are visually but not physically appealing. Feathers invite touch
  3. Conversation. A lamp that everyone comments on the first time they enter the room

Care

Light dusting with a feather duster or soft brush, monthly.

If feathers get compressed in transit or after long storage, hold them briefly (10-15 seconds) in steam from a kettle and they recover their natural fullness.

Avoid water. Avoid direct south-facing sunlight for years on end (the dye will eventually pale). Avoid placing within 30cm of any heat source: feather oils can darken with prolonged warmth.

Shipping

Each lamp ships in a custom-fitted crate to protect the feather assembly. 14-day build-to-order lead time, then 2-3 day UK courier delivery. Comes with 2 spare feathers and instructions for swapping a damaged one (5-minute job, no tools needed).

Questions answered

Are the feathers real ostrich? +

Yes, natural ostrich feathers, ethically sourced from farms supplying the millinery and theatrical costume trade. Each feather is individually inspected and wired to the brass armature. Synthetic feathers are flatter and look obviously artificial under the lamp's own light.

Can I choose between floor and desktop versions? +

Yes — same lamp design in two scales. Floor version is 130cm tall × 45cm diameter (approximately the height of a side table), desktop is 45cm tall × 30cm diameter (sits on a sideboard, console, or large desk). Choose at checkout. Same feather count, same brass base, different armature heights.

Is the bulb included? +

Yes: warm-white dimmable LED (2700K, equivalent to 60W incandescent). UK 3-pin plug with a 2m fabric-covered cord and foot-pedal dimmer. Plug-in only; no hardwiring required.

How do I clean the feathers? +

Light dusting with a feather duster or soft brush. Avoid water feathers will lose their lift and clump permanently. If feathers get compressed in transit, hold them in steam from a kettle for 10-15 seconds and they recover their fullness.

Is it ethically sourced? +

Yes, feathers come from South African ostrich farms that primarily serve the meat and leather trade; feathers are a byproduct that would otherwise be discarded. We do not source from any farm using live-plucking. This is the same supply chain used by the millinery industry.

Will it look dated in 5 years? +

Statement lamps go in and out of fashion, but feather lamps in particular have remained fashion-relevant for decades; they appeared in 1920s Parisian apartments, 1970s disco lounges, and contemporary maximalist interiors. The lamp design isn't trendy; it's a perennial.

What rooms does it work best in? +

Floor version: hallways, bedroom corners (beside a chair or reading nook), behind a sofa, beside a console table in an entryway. Desktop version: above a sideboard, on a bar cart, beside a dressing table, on a large desk as a feature piece rather than task light.

Does it give off enough light to read by? +

It's an ambient/feature light, not a task light. The diffused glow through the feathers creates atmospheric lighting (think dim restaurant or cocktail bar) but isn't bright enough to read or work by. Pair with a directional reading lamp if needed.

How is it shipped? +

Custom-fitted shipping crate to protect the feather assembly. Floor version ships in a 140cm × 50cm × 50cm box; desktop in a 50cm × 35cm × 35cm box. 2-3 day UK courier delivery once built. 14-day lead time as each is built to order.

What happens if a feather breaks in transit? +

We include 2 spare feathers per lamp and full instructions for swapping a damaged feather (it's a 5-minute job). For more significant damage we replace at our cost — keep all packaging until you're satisfied with the lamp's condition.
