About this piece
The Italian leather sister of the German calf wash bag a step up in finish, with the included travel mirror most kits forget.
Two-piece construction in smooth black Italian calf hide, hand-stitched at the seams. The leather is sourced from a Tuscan tannery that supplies the high-end European leather goods houses, then vegetable-tanned and aniline-finished. The dye penetrates the hide rather than sitting on the surface, which means it patinas richly over years of use rather than scuffing back to pale leather.
What’s included
- The hanging wash bag itself
- A detachable leather-bound travel mirror (9cm × 12cm) with snap closure
- Water-resistant fabric lining throughout
- Solid brass swivel hanging hook
The mirror is the small detail that separates this kit from a standard wash bag. Most hotel bathrooms have decent mirrors, but anyone who’s done early-morning shaving in a poorly lit AirBnB or train sleeper compartment knows the value of a personal travel mirror that you can angle to your face.
Italian calf vs German calf: the honest comparison
The two wash bags in our catalogue look similar from a distance but they are genuinely different products.
Italian calf (this one) is the dressier option. Smoother surface, tighter grain, slightly softer hand. Patinas darker and richer with use. Looks more refined paired with formal travel clothes.
German calf is the workhorse. Firmer leather, more structure, holds shape better when packed full. Patinas to a more rugged finish. Looks better with weekend or outdoor travel.
Both are full-grain, hand-finished, and built for decades. The choice is style and presence rather than quality.
Use it daily, not just for travel
The hanging hook is sized for any standard bathroom towel rail or door hook. A lot of customers buy this for travel and end up using it as their permanent bathroom wash bag; keeps razor, brush, dental, and toiletries off the bathroom counter, and you can just lift it down when packing for a trip.
Care
- Monthly: wipe with slightly damp cloth, dry immediately
- Every 3-6 months: apply a small amount of neutral leather conditioner (Saphir Renovateur, or Kiwi neutral)
- Avoid: alcohol-based cleaners, prolonged direct sunlight, leaving it wet
- Spills: wipe immediately — water itself is fine, but pooled water on the surface for hours can leave a mark
Built to last decades. Patinas to look better at year five than year one.
Questions answered
What's the difference between this and the German calf leather wash bag? +
Two real differences. (1) Leather: Italian calf is smoother and softer with a tighter grain looks dressier; German calf is firmer with more structure. (2) Mirror: this Italian version includes a leather-bound travel mirror, which the German version doesn't. Pick this if you want the more refined look + the mirror; pick German if you want a workhorse bag at lower price.
Where is the leather sourced? +
From a tannery in Tuscany, the same supply chain that fits the Italian leather goods houses. Vegetable-tanned then aniline-finished, which means the dye penetrates the hide rather than sitting on the surface. It will develop a richer patina with use.
How big is the included mirror? +
9cm × 12cm — about the size of a smartphone. Folds flat against itself with a snap closure so the glass doesn't get scratched in transit. Detachable from the wash bag if you prefer to use them separately.
Does it fit a full wet shave kit? +
Yes: comfortably fits a safety razor, brush, soap puck in tin, aftershave bottle (under 100ml for flights), styptic pencil, plus your standard toothbrush and dental kit. The two main compartments separate wet and dry.
Will it pass airline carry-on liquid rules? +
The bag itself is unlimited; just observe the standard 100ml-per-bottle / one-litre-bag rule for any liquids inside. The water-resistant lining catches drips so a leaking bottle won't soak the leather.
Can I use it as a daily wash bag at home, not just travelling? +
Yes the hanging hook works on any standard towel rail or hook in a bathroom. Many customers use it as a permanent bathroom wash bag and just lift it down when packing for a trip. Saves the bathroom-counter clutter.
Is it waterproof? +
Water-resistant interior, not submersible. Designed for splashes from your toothbrush or a slightly leaking shampoo bottle. Don't submerge or expose to heavy rain, surface leather is not sealed.
How do I care for the leather? +
Wipe down monthly with a slightly damp cloth, then condition every 3-6 months with a small amount of leather conditioner (we like Saphir Renovateur or Kiwi neutral). Avoid alcohol-based cleaners which strip the aniline finish.
Is this a good gift? +
Excellent gift for: a man who travels for work; a wedding/anniversary gift (leather is the 3rd anniversary traditional gift); a 30th, 40th or 50th birthday gift. Ships in branded LuxuryTrex packaging, no extra wrapping needed.
